Current Chanticleer Scholars
2012

Andrew Hill, Curator of the David C. Lam Asian Garden at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden, Vancouver, BC, Canada, used the Chanticleer Scholarship for an international garden research tour in spring 2011. He focused on Scotland, where the climate and collections are similar to that of Vancouver. The opportunity furthered Andy's study of plant collections and best management practices, and helped him improve the Garden's botanical collection, international connections, and his leadership skills.
Connie Cottingham, Public Relations and Special Events Coordinator at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens, pursued ideas to increase the garden's visitation and visibility. She attended meetings of the American Public Gardens Association and the Garden Writers Association, learning from speakers and garden events, as well as connecting with peers. Connie gathered techniques regarding public relations, increasing revenue and ways to establish the State Botanical Garden of Georgia as a destination for visitors. She also visited similar institutions to discuss programming and publicity ideas.
Tim Boland, Executive Director of the Polly Hill Arboretum, Martha's Vineyard, MA, participated in the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders offered through the Center for Social Innovation at Stanford University. The program helped Tim understand how to integrate the arboretum's organizational mission with economic strategy, while providing extensive training in strategic planning and personnel management.
Zhanna Yermakov, Natural Areas Manager of the Chicago Park District, IL, utilized the Scholarship to attend Museum Leaders: The Next Generation offered by the Getty Leadership Institute (GLI), and pursued coursework at the Chicago Botanic Garden. These two academic programs support Zhanna's development in becoming a stronger leader in the field of public horticulture and enhance the skills she uses in her work with the Chicago Park District.
